“They say necessity is the mother of invention. I agree. If somebody had invented the KardShark I wouldn’t have had to.” – Dr. Stephen Kerr
How It All Started
Hello, my name is Stephen Kerr MD, I am a surgeon, and the inventor of the KardShark cell phone wallet. I purchased my first cell phone card sleeve over 5 years ago. Though I liked it initially, after a while the fabric loosened up and my cards kept slipping out. I kept asking, “Why doesn’t somebody make one of these things with a flap to keep the cards in place?”
I scoured the web for over a year, but nobody was selling a version with a security flap to keep the cards from slipping out. Up for a challenge, I ordered some neoprene and made one myself. It took me about 2 hours to craft, and it lasted more than a year. I was hooked, so I made another one for myself with some improvements. That one lasted even longer, but still 2 years later there was no commercially desirable product available. I decided to change that.
Getting Serious About Design
I filed for a patent to protect the idea, make it patent pending, then set about a more serious design round. Once I thought I was close, I took the idea to a Sewn Products Services, a textile design company in Seattle, WA. It took a lot of time and effort, but the end result was the most functional cell phone wallet ever developed. I know this firsthand. I have one on my phone today; it works perfectly and looks great. I gave one of the early prototypes to a friend at the hospital I work at. Three weeks later I saw him and he was emphatic, “This thing is a life changer” he said, and it truly is.
Customer Feedback Improves Design
The original KardShark was made of neoprene and had the original stylized KardShark logo on the front in various color combinations. Although people loved the functionality many indicated they wanted other choices for their phone. After researching methods of getting designs onto the fabric I found that the best result would be accomplished through a process called dye-sublimation printing. This required changes in fabric choice and overall design.
Next, we needed ART, so we held a worldwide design contest and voila, numerous artists submitted incredible designs. Website visitors helped pick 5 of the top designs and we added a sleek blue minimalist design for our first production run.
Customers As Engineers
Some customers suggested the KardShark wallet would be even more useful if it could be attached to the phone when wanted, and removed when not. We listened to these customers who used wireless charging pads, crowded car-mount phone holders, and those who simply wanted to be able to remove and pocket their wallet for whatever reason.
We did it; we used the familiar and proven Velcro® brand hook and loop fastener so customers can attach and detach the KardShark wallet to their phone or phone case.
Versatility and No-drop Grip
The new and improved KardShark cell phone wallet is better than ever. Made of soft, durable, and washable “Scuba” fabric, the KardShark wallet comes with a ‘life of your phone’ replacement guarantee. The flexible Scuba material allows users to safely store up to 10 cards and some cash. The security flap, also made with Velcro® brand hook and loop fastener, keeps cards safe and secure. And, it doubles as a no-drop grip which is great for taking pictures and video and navigating your phone with one hand. That means you really could tie the other arm behind your back and still take your best selfie ever.
We hope you like the new and improved KardShark cell phone wallet and try one out for yourself.
